What is Life? バクテリアの性（The existence of sex in bacteria）

みなさん、こんにちは、本日の講義は少し遅れてしまいました。昨日、千葉大学の医学部教授で日本細菌学会理事長の野田公俊先生のご講演「ミクロの世界からのメッセージ」を拝聴致しました。大変興味深いものでしたので、いくつかトピックを紹介するとともに、バクテリアの性について説明致します。

Hi, good afternoon everyone. I am sorry, the start of this class has been little late. Yesterday, I attended the special lecture of "the message form micro world", which was held at Fukushima city by Professor Masatoshi Noda, who is the master of Japanese Society for Bacteriology. It was very interesting for me, because his lecture contains many humor for elementary school student. So, I will introduce some topics of his lecture, and explain about the existence of sex in bacteria.

サミぃは以前、多剤耐性菌について、講義を行いました。細菌には、発酵食品に大切なもの、有機物を分解してリサイクルの役に立つ者、そして、病気を引き起こすものの三つがあるそうです。野田先生は現在、コレラ菌や、O-157に関して研究されているそうです。

I explained about multi-antibiotics resistance at 11th of September. The professor Noda introduced that there are three types of bacteria, for fermentation, recycling, and the cause of infection. And the main theme of his study are Cholera and O-157.

野田先生は、そうした食中毒菌は胃酸に対して抵抗性があって、なかなか死なないのに対して、熱には弱いと仰っておりました。覚えやすいのはO-157を反対から読んで「75度１分OK」だそうです。75度で1分加熱すると、大丈夫だそうです。

Professor Noda did teach us the most important point to prevent food poisoning. O-157 is resistant to acid in our stomach, but they are weak for heat. You should lean reversible reading of "O-157" that is 75 degree C for 1 min is OK. To prevent food poisoning, we have to heat foods for only 1 minute at 75 degree C. It is very simple and not so difficult. Of course we have to wash our hands before eating.

さて、本日のタイトルにあります「バクテリアの性」に関してご紹介致します。これは野田先生から、車の中で教えていただきました。生物の教科書では「ゾウリムシ」が性を獲得した原始的な生き物だと、生き物博士の卵たちは習います。しかし、先生によれば、バクテリアにも「性」があるそうです。彼らは生活環境の悪化に伴い、プラスミドと呼ばれる、環状DNAを、持っていない個体にくっついて与えるそうです。与える方を雄、受け取る方を雌と呼んでいるそうです。

Here, I start the class of today, about the existence of sex in bacteria. This was taught by Professor Noda in the car. We are taught that the origin of sex was observed in Paramecium in text book of basic biology in University. But the professor told me that there is sex in bacteria. It was very impressed thing for us. He explained that some bacteria gave plasmid DNA for other  individual when the environment become worse. The donor is called as male, and the recipient is called as female, like us. This is the sex in the bacteria, he said so.
