What is Life? Mathematics in Life(生命に於ける数学)

Good morning everyone. It is getting cold also in F city, because it had been the December. Could you obtain any goods by using millage points on your iPhone or iPad?


Anyway, I had introduced the complex relation of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics, as major scientific areas. Many people may understand easily the relation between Biology and Chemistry, or Physics and Mathematics. Such two groups have tightly relations, but can you image the relation between Biology and Mathematics? Even a cell division or gene expression can be explained by the Mathematics, because we are aggregates of molecules. However, such work is too tough to elucidate all reaction of individual.


On the other hand, is there anything can be explained by mathematical rules? Please watch Life with objective view. You can detect some beautiful shapes in some plants and animals. Such shapes are explained by Fibonacci (12-13th century) numbers. Because I am not a mathematician, it is little difficult to introduce the principle. But I would try.(^^;)


At first, please see the sequence of numbers in below.
1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89,……
Do you find a rule in the sequence? Raise your hand. Yes, good job. The next number is calculated by addition of left number and itself (2=1+1, 3=1+2,……). This is the Fibonacci numbers. Surprisingly, the division of stalks in tree, rotation of leaves or petals of plants (rose, sun flower, and pine) can be explained by the principle. And the shape of shell in snail or nautilus are also showed by the theory.

何か法則を見つけられますか?はい、どうぞ、正解です。左二つの数字を足すとその隣の数字となるんですね (例:2=1+1, 3=1+2,……)。これがフィボナッチ数列なのです。驚くべきことに、木の枝の枝分かれや薔薇、向日葵、松ぼっくりの葉や花びら、カサの配置までこの原理によって説明可能なのだそうです。さらに、かたつむりやオウムガイの殻の形までがこの原理によって説明可能だそうなのです。

Most animal keep the analogous shape in their growth. It is surprised that such growth is explained in mathematics. How do you think about the fact? If you want to study about the theory, please check this page.
