What is Life? 性転換について(The Gender Conversion)

Good morning everyone. It was very cold rainy with sleet. I do not want to catch cold in this winter. The leaf's color of mountain in my country has gradually changed with process of this season as shown in below.

Today's theme of this class is gender conversion. Recently, some persons, who converted their superficial gender from male to female are focused on TV. But their genotype must be XY, as you may know. Say the truth, I have a question about the capelin. Looking over the fish sold at supermarket, all of individuals are female. I have not seen male of the fish.

By studying the life style of the fish, I found the fact of the fishery. The large group of female is captured by net. Most of them are female, but little are male. The destiny of the male of the fish is feed of other fish or compost of vegetables. Because we had learned that the gender conversion must not be occurred in most vertebrates, the rule may be applied for the fish.

On the other hand, please think about it in invertebrates. In most invertebrates, the gender conversion is widely occurred. The most famous case is about Alaskan pink shrimp as a source of Sushi. The gender of young shrimps is male, but the gender of old shrimps changed to female. Although I do not know the mechanism of the conversion, it may be truth that the conversion is utilized for the survival in some groups of animals. Do you know "What is Life"?

(1) The gender conversion must not be occurred in human, but it occurs in some animals.
(2) The conversion has been utilized as a strategy of survival.

Today's class is over. Have a nice day. Click the button at the bottom of this What is Life?, if you are a student of this class.
